Continental Drift and Cancer
The story of Alfred Wegener is one of many in which a simple, obvious truth remains hidden in plain sight, even when clearly articulated.
Calviri has developed two products with the potential to end cancer worldwide: a diagnostic that can sensitively detect cancer at stage 1 or earlier, and a vaccine designed to prevent cancer altogether. As described previously (see links above), both are grounded in simple, logical approaches to diagnosis and prevention. We are often asked: if the logic is so clear, why isn’t their potential universally recognized?
To answer that, consider the story of Alfred Wegener.
In 1910, Wegener, a German meteorologist, noticed something striking while studying a world map: the continents fit together like pieces of a puzzle. As shown in the figure, this was obvious once pointed out. A child could see South America and Africa, in particular, seemed to “snuggle” together.
In 1912 Wegener presented his idea that all continents were once joined in a single landmass, later named Pangaea, which broke apart and drifted to form the continents we know today. His idea was widely dismissed. The notion that continents could move across the Earth’s surface seemed absurd.
Undeterred, Wegener spent years gathering evidence, including identical fossils found in West Africa and Brazil. Yet, it wasn’t until the 1950s—after the discovery of the Mid-Atlantic Rift—that Wegener’s continental drift was finally accepted. Wegener did not live to see this vindication; he died in 1930 during an expedition in Greenland.

The same pattern applies to Calviri’s work. For cancer detection, the most direct and sensitive way to assess health is by reading a person’s antibody profile. While building the technology to do this was challenging, the underlying concept is straightforward.
For cancer prevention, the logic is equally clear: the best way to fight cancer is to prevent it. A preventative vaccine must target shared tumor neoantigens—mistakes that only arise through RNA mis-processing. Elementary, Watson.
It took four decades for Wegener’s obvious insight to be accepted. Let us hope it does not take the biomedical community nearly as long to recognize the simple logic behind Calviri’s innovations.
